Born in Hamburg in 1924, Mueller fled the Nazi regime at the age of 15, immigrating to the United States in 1939.

Her poetry, known for its warmth and introspection, garnered numerous accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1997 for her volume Alive Together: New and Selected Poems.
